2. The A, B, C’s of Domain Names
One of the most important things in online marketing
is your domain name. It is your exclusive Web
address. It should be easy to remember and relate to your
online presence. Your company name is usually the best
choice and should be used whenever possible.
The domain name is the unique alphanumeric name that identifies an Internet site. Domain name is associated
with a 32-bit dotted decimal number called an IP (Internet
Protocol) address. Domain names are also called
URLs. URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. This
is what you see in your Web Browser Address field.
Domain names and their associated IP addresses are stored on a Domain Name Server, or DNS server. The server keeps
track of IP addresses and their associated domain
names. Using a domain name makes it easy for people to
find and remember you. Consider this popular Web site
address - www.yahoo.com. The latter is easier to remember
than its IP address of 64.58.76.224. However, both of them
lead to the same target - the home page of Yahoo!
Advantages of having your own domain name:
-
Your presence moves when you have
to change your Web host;
-
Internet marketing travels with the
domain name;
-
Your e-mail address will match your
Web site address so you can advertise your company with every e-mail you
send. For additional ways to market your Web site, go

to Market Your Web Site;"
-
You will never worry about
forwarding or loosing your e-mail messages when you change ISP;
-
It projects the image of an
established business
operating online in a professional manner.
Your domain name must be registered with a
company that provides registering services for top-level domains: .com, .net,
.org, and .edu. It can be purchased through Network Solutions or
Register.com. You can search
these sites to determine whether your preferred domain name is
available. The fee for registering your name is between
$45.00-$70.00 for the first two years with a $20.00-$35.00
annual renewal fee. The process of registration is easy
and usually takes less that 24 hours.
Names are going quickly. Register your name TODAY even if
you do not plan to build your Web site now. Then, when you
decide to put up your Web site, www.yourname.com will be
available. And if your customers know your company exists,
they will find your Web site quickly and easily. This
makes it easier to do business with you.
At IntelliSoft, will be glad to help you with registering your
domain name. We do not charge for this beyond the
registration fee paid to Network Solutions or
Register.com. Contact us using the email or feedback form
below to request your domain name registration.
