1a. Cable – uses the existing (or new)
cabling for cable TV.
The speed of this type of connection is up
to 1.5 Mbps for download (i.e., data flow from the ISP to the
client) and up to 128 Kbps for upload (i.e., data flow from the
client to the ISP.) The
most popular cable ISP in Chicagoland area is AT&T Broadband.
Advantages:
High transmission speed;
Does not use the existing
telephone line – the phone line is available for telephone calls;
Permanent connection to the
Internet – no waiting time to establish the connection;
The cable modem is usually
provided by the ISP and not purchased by the client;
Fixed price.
Disadvantages:
Permanent connection to
the Internet – more vulnerable to hacker attacks.
Problems are avoided by using proper software or hardware
protection – firewall (see below.)
